The Cancer Registrar is responsible for maintaining an Approved Cancer Program to include, Cancer Registry, Tumor Board, Cancer Committee and Quality Assurance for Auburn Regional Medical Center. Abstracts information from patient records with the diagnosis of cancer. This information is entered into the facility’s data base and submitted to the State Registry. Ensures accuracy and integrity of the medical record abstract data.
Analyzes and abstracts cancer related information from patients’ medical records via keying the information into the mainframe medical record abstract system. Thorough understanding of OncoLog software.
Using ICD-9 coding, codes all carcinomas, sarcomas, melanoma, leukemias and lymphomas cases at the facility. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and cancer disease process, as well as pharmacology.
Complies statistical reports within the designated timeframe.
Assumes responsibility for cross-checking quality, accuracy and completeness of abstracted material.
Performs reviews of medical records to ensure completed oncology information.
Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments. Works closely with physicians and Pathology.
Assists in answering the telephones, taking accurate messages, routing calls appropriately.
Assists in retrieving charts for physician completion when necessary.
Performs performance improvement functions through data collection and documentation review.
