JOB TITLE: Physical Therapist

JOB SUMMARY:
Carries out the duties related to the proper function of the Physical Therapy Department. Treats all patients in accordance to state laws and professional standards. Is directly responsible for education in rehabilitation philosophy and methods in the hospital. Carries out the medical plan of care for physical therapy in the home when indicated.
WORK PERFORMED:
Service to the Patient: Evaluates the physical status of the patient.
Consults with physicians and other health care personnel.
Reports any significant changes in patient condition to the Home Care staff or primary physician.
Plans and executes the Physical Therapy Program.
Participates in Home Health Patient Care Conference as appropriate.
Re-evaluates patient at periodic interval to determine changes in physical status and progress of the Physical Therapy Program.
Keeps appropriate records and reports on patient.
Transportation of inpatients to and from the Physical Therapy Department.
Educates patient and or persons associated closely with them.
Departmental: Setting up of treatment areas and cleaning of treatment areas after patient use including whirlpool.
Ordering and stocking of treatment areas with linen and supplies.
Scheduling of patients as needed.
Filling out and recording patient charges.
Duties and responsibilities related to Performance Improvement/Risk Management as delegated.
Must comply with hospital policies concerning Standard Precautions and Infection Control.
Attends all required hospital inservices.
Efficient use of time to meet productivity levels.
Supports the Service Excellence initiative at Worthington Regional Hospital, participating as needed.
Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Public Relations: Performs in whatever way is necessary to promote good relationships between other agencies, physician and other departments in the hospital and in the general public.
Job Knowledge: Maintains competency including age specific in area of physical therapy.
Must know and utilize theory of physical medicine.
Must have knowledge of machine operation and maintenance repairs of same.
Must be able to supply the modalities used in physical medicine with full knowledge of their effects.
Must have adequate knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and the effect of treatment procedure on the body function and structure.
Must have basic knowledge of disease process in the human, causative factors and values of physical therapy agents in its relief.
Must have full knowledge of sterile technique and its modification on physical therapy.
Growth: Participation in professional organizations concerned with physical therapy.
Remains current with trends in physical therapy.
Provides inservice to staff, nursing and interested agencies.
Professional Conduct: Demonstrates accountability for professional behavior and promotes the philosophy and goals of Worthington Regional Hospital.
Exhibits a courteous and respectful attitude, when interacting with patients, families, other personnel and departments.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Graduate of approved school of physical therapy.
License to practice physical therapy in the state of Minnesota.
Work Experience:
Prior physical therapy experience preferred, but not required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Special Demands:
Must be able to work independently. Strong organizational abilities required. Work outside the hospital setting required periodically. Must posses a valid drivers license and provide own transportation to home visits.
Physical Demands:
Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries medium weight items. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range and speech ability. Requires working under stressful conditions and working irregular and occasionally long hours. Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids. Ability to distinguish various odors and colors.
