Posting Description: NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION

 Under general supervision of Laboratory Director and according to established guidelines, is responsible for coordination and directing activities of subordinates engaged in performing routine and non-routine laboratory testing, phlebotomy and customer service activities.  In doing so, ensures quality and quantity standards relating to delivery of laboratory services are achieved by reviewing test results, service delivery outcomes and quality monitoring of output. Coordinates departmental supply utilization, maintenance of stock levels and purchasing.
 

FT, HS/GED, BS Degree in Medical Technology, ASCP certified, and current FL license. Must be able to lead by example; excellent communication skills; interact with pathologist; responsible for QA/QC/CAP; promotes positive morale; responsible for daily testing in department. Follows all laboratory procedures and policies, (quality control, precision, accuracy, and correlation studies, maintenance and corrective actions, preparing and evaluation of reagents, media, and standards) to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of lab services. Maintains competency in all designated areas.   Evaluates specimen integrity and correlates tests results to the clinical picture of each individual. Responsible for the communication of test results to all clinical personnel that may be involved in care of the patient.  Utilizes pathologist for consultations as needed.    Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains clinical lab instruments and equipment.  Recognizes and corrects basic instrument malfunctions; refers serious problems to supervisor. Validates normal ranges, and performs statistical analysis.  Provides clinical orientation and supervision for new or less skilled laboratory personnel and for students in training. May lecture and provide continuing education demonstrations. In the absence of the general supervisor, may provide general supervision.

Experience  Required:  None.  Preferred:  One year in applicable section of laboratory.

Complete Description

Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology or related field with certification from the ASCP or equivalent. Effective communication skills desired.
Med Tech or MLT, work as a generalist in the MCW Laboratory on second shift.  Rotates weekends and holidays.

Performs diagnostic laboratory tests, which are both routine and highly complex. Evaluates the effects that a patient’s physiological condition may have on test results and provide the physician with data necessary to determine the presence, extent, cause and treatment of disease. A Baccalaureate Degree in Medical Technology or related field, including a one year internship program in an approved school as a Medical Technologist by a nationally recognized certification agency is required. Previous experience in a clinical laboratory is preferred.

Qualifications
4 years experience in an Acute Care Facility Microbiology lab setting with 1-2 years in a senior or supervising capacity. Prior senior or supervisory experience to include: specialized and complex analysis, computer experience, quality control, collaboration, current Fl.   Lab  Supervisor license required. ASCP registration preferred.

  The Medical Technologist performs laboratory testing in one or more sections of the laboratory that assists with the diagnosis of patients.  The tasks and responsibilities include:

Processes specimens, prepares reagents, performs testing procedures; reports and interprets test results.
Performs quality control testing, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
Verifies analytic accuracy, precision, sensitivity and references ranges for test methods.
Works with Physician to analyze results and conduct more difficult, non-routine tests.
Serves as a consultant to medical laboratory technicians and phlebotomists as needed.
Orients and mentors new staff members.
Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
