The Director of Surgical Services is responsible, in cooperation with the Administrator for surgical Services, for the planning, implementation and coordination of all daily operations within the Operating Room, ASU, PACU, Endoscopy, and Sterile Processing. The Director of Surgical Services must be capable of interacting and collaborating with all members of the health care team. Must have the ability to work productively and cooperatively with community resources. Good interpersonal skills are required, due to the frequent contact with individuals from outside the departments. The Director of Surgical Services oversees the management of many expensive pieces of equipment and instrumentation. It is her responsibility to ensure that all members of the staff take proper care with the equipment and instruments. Physician requests for equipment and/or products are often made to the Manager. It is his/her responsibility to make those needs known, so that they can be addressed. It is part of his/her responsibility to use the time available to the best advantage. The Director of Surgical Services is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of his/her assigned patients. He/she is responsible for the supervision of assigned personnel. This position requires an intimate knowledge of both departmental and hospital-wide policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of nursing care. Interpretative skills, frequent interactive and consultative associations along with management and supervisory skills are inherent in the position. This position serves as the designee of the MDPOS in his/her absence. Incumbent may function in the role of the MDPOS in the event the MDPOS is unable to fulfill his/her responsibilities.
Education: Requires a Master’s Degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or related field.

Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of data management and data modeling. Knowledge of financial and statistical principles. Competency in market analysis and business plan development. Familiarity with federal, state and local regulations impacting healthcare and the field of transplantation.

Skills: Requires analytical ability necessary to resolve extremely complex short and long term problems requiring the application of both clinical and management principles. The ability to promote and maintain good interpersonal relationships; proficiency in team building, conflict resolution, and group interaction. Proven ability to manage large diverse groups of individuals. Proven leadership and communication skills. The ability to coordinate complex multi-disciplinary processes in order to facilitate satisfaction of internal and external goals. Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred. Holds high degree of clinical expertise in area being managed. Demonstrates skill in leadership management, communication, counseling, problem-solving, decision making, conflict resolution and group process. Able to interface effectively with divergent groups. Able to positively represent the practice of professional nursing. Required Length and Type of Experience: Three years experience as a clinical nurse to include one year of management. Required Licensure, Certification or Registry Registered Nurse currently licensed in the State of Ohio. Required Physical and Environmental Demands Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires some exposure to communicable disease and body fluids. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.

 The Nurse Manager has the total responsibility of the management of a specialized area of nursing with twenty-four (24) hour accountability.
