Director of Patient Care
Responsible for the operations of the Orthopaedic/neurology and Post Surgical Service line unit within a healthcare facility. Responsible for implementing and developing the neurology services according to the organizational objective and in compliance with cost control methods. Directs neurology staff involved in the diagnosis and care of patients. Requires a bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Leads and directs the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Typically reports to top management.

Minumum five years of acute care, post surgery experience, preferably at the Director level. Must have at a minimum an associates in nursing from an accreditedd institution and MUST have a Master’s degree(a master’s degree in nursing is preferred). THE CHALLENGE
It is imperative the Nursing Director of Medical/Surgical & Family Birth (and Clinical Support) be able to be a supportive mentor and a leader with the staff in a variety of areas including the Medical/Cardiac Unit, the Surgical/Ortho Unit, the Critical Care/Pediatrics Unit, Family Birth Center and the Nursing Staffing Office. In addition, the director is a member of the Nurse Executive Team and as such, participates in strategic planning and problem-solving for Nursing as a whole. The successful individual must be very comfortable operating in a collaborative, matrix organization with little regard for hierarchy. This individual must spearhead the initiatives regarding the care of the patient, employee engagement, fiscal accountability and the balanced scorecard.

THE POSITION
The NURSING Director is a leadership position created to enhance the Medical Surgical and Family Birth units and to bring these units together toward a common goal. The Nursing Director will also work with their departments to elevate the nursing practice at hospital. The Nursing Director reports directly to the Vice President, Nursing, . This individual will be extremely visible throughout managing the ongoing operations, leading continuous improvement, and achieving excellence, and outstanding customer service.
The Director must provide direction to all staff as well as enjoy coaching and mentoring those who report to him/her, work collaboratively with system peers who have hospital operational responsibilities, and in turn, know how to best support the Vice President, Patient Care Services and keep her informed on appropriate issues.

Ortho Nurse Manager

The Ortho/Trauma Nurse Manager provides leadership with responsibility for planning, directing and evaluating the patient care and services provided. The tasks and responsibilities include:

Manages personnel in the accomplishment of designated goals and the provision of nursing care and services.
Manages the provision of adequate and competent staffing.
Evaluates effectiveness of care in producing desired patient outcomes.
Addresses any issues that affect the desired patient outcomes.
Ensures that age and culturally appropriate care is given.
Ensures departmental compliance with regulatory and JCAHO requirements.
Monitors and adheres to annual hospital operating budget.
Implements cost-effective strategies in staffing and supply management decisions.
Assists staff in providing patient care and services as needed.
Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.

Required Job Qualifications include:

Current licensure as an RN
Current certification as a BLS Healthcare Provider.
Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required. Master’s Degree will be required by 2013.
Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience in Ortho/Trauma, Med/Surg Ortho or Ortho/Neuro.
Must have at least 2 years of recent management experience in an acute care hospital setting.
Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.
Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, strong communication skills and leadership abilities.
Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment up to 50 pounds.

The Ortho/Trauma unit is a 29-bed inpatient unit with approximately 40 FTEs. This individual reports to the Director of Medical/Surgical Services. The department staff consists of 4 Assistant Nurse Managers, a Nurse Clinician, RNs, Patient Care Techs and Unit Clerks.
