The Manager of Risk Management will direct the Risk Management Program, including the functions of clinical risk management, claims management, program administration and risk management education for the facility.  Reporting to the VP of Quality and Risk, the Risk Manager will be responsible for coordination of systems necessary for the identification, evaluation, monitoring, reduction and /or elimination of professional and general liability risk exposures.  The Risk Manager will provide counseling and education to facility leadership, clinical personnel, Board of Trustees and medical staff members related to risk exposures including risk prevention and risk reduction.  The Manager of Risk Management will participate in the management and support of professional liability litigation at the direction and under the guidance of the HCI Department of claims.

Responsible for the provision and supervision of all patient care on assigned shifts by performing the following duties:

CARE MANAGER

Required Licensure:
Current and valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Ohio. Professional certification as a Case Manager required within one year of eligibility.

- Addresses/resolves system problems impeding diagnostic or treatment progress.  Able to identify and resolve delays and obstacles to discharge.

- Utilizes conflict resolution skills as necessary to ensure timely resolution of issues.

2.  Completes Utilization Management and Quality Screening for assigned patients.

- Applies approved clinical appropriateness criteria to monitor appropriateness of admissions and continued stays, and  documents findings based on Department standards.

- Identifies at-risk populations using approved screening tool and follows established reporting procedures.

- Monitors LOS and ancillary resource use.  Takes actions as directed to achieve continuous improvement in both areas.

- Refers cases and issues to Case Management Medical Director in compliance with Department procedures and follows up as indicated.
 
- Communicates with Resource Center to facilitate covered day reimbursement certification for assigned patients. Discusses payor criteria and issues on a case-by-case basis with clinical staff and follows up to resolve problems with payors as needed.
 
-Identifies potential issues and forwards information to Quality Management Department.
 
- Complies with Institute policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.

3. Manages all aspects of discharge planning for assigned patients.
 
-Ensures that all elements critical to the plan of care have been communicated to the patient/family and members of the healthcare team and are documented as necessary to assure continuity of care.
             
-  Meets directly with patient/family to assess needs to develop an individualized continuing care plan in collaboration with physician.

4.  Actively participates in clinical performance improvement activities.

- Assists in the collection and reporting of resource and financial indicators including case mix, LOS, cost per case, excess days, resource utilization, readmission rates, denials and appeals.
 
- Uses data to drive decisions and plan/implement performance improvement strategies related to case management for assigned patients, including fiscal, clinical and patient satisfaction data.
 
- Collects, analyzes and addresses variances from the plan of care/care path with physician and/or other members of the healthcare team.  Uses concurrent variance data to support practice and positively impact outcomes.
 
- Collects delay and other data for specific performance and/or outcome indicators as determined by Director of Case Management.
 
- Documents key clinical path variances and outcomes which relate to areas of direct responsibility (e.g., discharge planning).  Uses pathway data in collaboration with other disciplines to ensure effective patient management concurrently.

5.  Ensures safe care to patients adhering to policies, procedures, and standards, within budgetary specifications, including time management, supply management, productivity, and accuracy of practice.

6.  Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency, supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization. Communication/Education

Ortho Nurse Manager 

The Ortho/Trauma Nurse Manager provides leadership with responsibility for planning, directing and evaluating the patient care and services provided.  The tasks and responsibilities include:

Manages personnel in the accomplishment of designated goals and the provision of nursing care and services.
Manages the provision of adequate and competent staffing.
Evaluates effectiveness of care in producing desired patient outcomes.
Addresses any issues that affect the desired patient outcomes.
Ensures that age and culturally appropriate care is given.
Ensures departmental compliance with regulatory and JCAHO requirements.
Monitors and adheres to annual hospital operating budget.
Implements cost-effective strategies in staffing and supply management decisions.
Assists staff in providing patient care and services as needed.
Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.

Required Job Qualifications include:

Current licensure as an RN
Current certification as a BLS Healthcare Provider.
Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.  Master’s Degree will be required by 2013.
Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience in Ortho/Trauma, Med/Surg Ortho or Ortho/Neuro.
Must have at least 2 years of recent management experience in an acute care hospital setting.
Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.
Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, strong communication skills and leadership abilities.
Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment up to 50 pounds.

The Ortho/Trauma unit is a 29-bed inpatient unit with approximately 40 FTEs.  This individual reports to the Director of Medical/Surgical Services.  The department staff consists of 4 Assistant Nurse Managers, a Nurse Clinician, RNs, Patient Care Techs and Unit Clerks.
