Weekdays M-F (Fri until 5 p.m.) - Attached Patients (24 hours) - FPs round on own attached patients. Hospitalist only covers attached patients in special circumstances.
- Weekdays (M-Thurs) - Unattached Patients 7 p.m. - 7 a.m. - FPs take call for unattached patients. Call for new candidate coming in is 1:9.
- Weekends Fri 5 p.m. - Monday 7 a.m. - Five FPs take call for attached AND unattached patients. Call for new candidate coming in for weekend call for attached AND unattached patients is 1:5. Weekend call begins at 5 pm on Friday evening and ends at 7 a.m. on Monday morning. Shifts are usually split between two FP’s -worked out among themselves. For example, FP Doc A covers 5 pm on Friday evening, until 12:00 noon on Saturday. Weekend call for FP Doc B begins at 12:00 noon on Saturday to 12:00 midnight on Saturday, then FP Doc A works 12:00 midnight on Saturday to 7 a.m. on Monday morning. The FP group is very flexible with weekend call, so everyone gives and takes for harmony.
Of Special Note: There is a strong ED staff - FPs are called in rarely - only if the ED staff truly needs FP doc. Frequency of being called in is extremely low. ED docs will call and discuss the patient and admit on FPs behalf, unless FP prefers to come in. Hospital has exclusive contract with ED group for six physicians and four Physician Assistants. PAs work 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. shifts only (peak hours with ED physician).
