Description
The nurse practitioner is a self-directed health care provider with advanced knowledge, skill and competence in a defined area of nursing practice. He/she functions as a primary provider for the cardiothoracic patient population and is responsible to a designated physician for ongoing patient care management/prescription writing and to the Vice President of Nursing for supervision of professional nursing practice. Working under the direction of the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and other attending surgeons and hospital policy, the nurse practitioner is responsible for the initial assessment and admission of patients; assisting in the evaluation and preparation of patients for surgery; acting as first and second assistant in the operating room; caring for patients following surgery and helping prepare patients for discharge. The nurse practitioner is also responsible for participating in the care of patients in the Cardiothoracic clinic in collaboration with the attending surgeon. The nurse practitioner is responsible for orienting fellows, residents, and medical students in the daily operations of the cardiothoracic service.
