Position Summary:
The Respiratory Shift Supervisor coordinates and directs departmental personnel in the provision of diagnostic and therapeutic Respiratory Care services to patients. Performs all other job duties as assigned.
II. Essential Functions:
* Performs the duties of the Respiratory Therapist as listed in their job description, as necessary
* Resolves management problems for their subordinates or the department in a timely manner. Develops effective plans for problem resolution. Performs follow-up and feedback as necessary to ensure resolution.
* Prepares and maintains data, reports, and other pertinent departmental information. (i.e. employee attendance records, in-service records, compliance of staff in signing memos, completing health screenings, schedule changes, and updates patient folders and patient treatment list).
* Assists in the development of department goals. (i.e. evaluates equipment, clinical policies and procedures for recommendation to purchase/implement, or contribute to the Process Improvement Program of the institution, and makes suggestions for the operating and capital equipment/improvements budget).
* Participates in developing, evaluating, monitoring, documenting, and reporting the departmental activities as part of the Process Improvement Program.
* Provides in-service/orientation on Respiratory Care, including but not limited to equipment, procedures, safety, and policies; to the staff, new employees, physicians, residents, nurses, students, and other facility personnel as required.
* Takes 24 hour call for weekend/holiday coverage as assigned.
* Participates in interdisciplinary committees as a department representative. Provides regular feedback to the Manager/Chief Therapist.
* Serves as resource person for the staff, nurse, and physician in resolving problems relating to specialized equipment, procedures, techniques, and similar problems associated with the care of critically ill patients.
* Assists with quality control and maintains required procedures and documentation on all equipment utilized by the Respiratory Care Department.
* Assists laboratory personnel correcting errors, maintaining accurate patient records, and assuring adequate point of care testing equipment/supplies (i.e. arterial blood gases).
III. Accountability:
The Respiratory Shift Supervisor is accountable to the Manager/Chief Therapist and the Administrative Director of the Respiratory Care Department. Performs job duties in a manner, which will ensure a physical environment free of hazards to self and others. Supervises and coordinates the delegation and implementation of patient care of licensed and non-licensed personnel for their assigned shift/area. This includes, but not limited to delegated assignments, monitoring of patient care, facilitating problem solving, discharge planning, implementation of protocols, and education/training of patients, students, and staff.
The incumbent performs, competency assessments, performance appraisals, counseling sessions, and disciplinary action reports.
The incumbent is also responsible for directing and supervising all staff personnel and coverage while taking call on the weekends or holidays. Responsible for coordinating the activities of students in Respiratory Care training from affiliated educational facilities.
The incumbent supervises the assigned employee groups in minor to extremely difficult clinical activities of patient care; clerical and filing activities to maintain records; and instructs new employees in the duties and responsibilities of the department. Plans staffing work schedules for their assigned shift or for all shifts as assigned. Assists the Manager/Chief Therapist in the planning of the budget, staffing needs, operations, Process Improvement, and cost controls.
